The Hematite Fuel Fabrication Facility produced high-enriched nuclear fuel for the U.S. Navy nuclear submarine program and other reactor programs during the "Cold War" years of 1956 to 1974. Problem. From 1956 to 1974, the Hematite Fuel Fabrication Facility produced nuclear fuel for military and peacetime purposes as the first privately owned and operated fuel production plant in the United States. As owner and operator, Westinghouse needed to manage and perform the entire decommissioning effort at the facility.
